Opunake Lake

Start of a new month, the start of duck shooting season. It is as if the birds all know they won't get shot at on this Lake as they all arrive from other places in time for this weekend. Seeing the large mobs of birds there at day break is great, knowing they are safe today which has dawned ideal for hunters. I am a lover of birds so it is always profoundly disturbing to think these sentient creatures are killed for sport. It is not really as if it wouldn't be cheaper to go to the supermarket and buy an alternative protein than spend all the money on outfitting for hunting. And of course it raises the whole gun issue too which carries such an enormous amount of sadness with it. I often wonder if we will ever become civilised enough as a race to stop unnecessary slaughters of any kind.
