In all the rugged weather being pushed ahead of the morning's massive electrical storm I spotted this amazing thing happening on one of the old Pohutakawa trees on the esplanade reserve.  Often these trees carry clusters of aerial roots but I have never witnessed them forming out of the tree. It appears that the bark has been damaged somehow - but maybe not - and this vigorous growth is bursting out of the "wound".  It is not dissimilar to a closeup view of a flower with the red capped with the yellow tips but of course the form and material is totally different. It was exciting to see this - something amazing and never before seen in my now very familiar surroundings. i considered it to be a reward.
